7.30 pm Natalka Sniadanko (Lviv/ Marbach am Neckar) in conversation with Katja Gasser (Vienna)
From her debut novel The Passion Collection to her most recent novel, Der Erzherzog, der den Schwarzmarkt regierte, Matrosen liebte und mein Großvater wurde, Natalka Sniadanko’s prose is full of wordplay and irony. In her absurd Lviv novel she sketches the life of Wilhelm von Habsburg, an eccentric figure whose ambition was once to become the King of Ukraine; she creates a potent mix of historical facts and literary fictions. Sniadanko draws a tragi-comic panorama
across generations and social classes, political systems and geographical borders.
8:30 pm Alenka Zupančič (Ljubljana) in conversation with Rosie Goldsmith (London)
Why philosophize about comedy? For Alenka Zupančič, comedy is a form of expression that allows outsiders to portray
events and, in that vein, intensively deal with the foreign. Her understanding of comedy is strictly delimited from any prescribed lightheartedness. True comedy has an air of the subversive about it. Does comedy fall silent in times of crisis? At what point does it become inappropriate?
