The 13th-century Minoritenkirche in Stein, one of the oldest mendicant order churches north of the Alps, has been used for secular purposes since the end of the 18th century. The Gothic church has had various uses over the years: as a salt and tobacco warehouse or as an equipment depot for the volunteer fire service in Stein.

Since the early 1990s the space with decorative wall frescoes dating from the 14th century has been designated as an “art space”. As the “Klangraum Krems”, since 2003 it has hosted various inspirational installations with audio-visual projects as well as concerts. The European Literature Days opening event is held annually in this acoustically atmospheric venue.
