Franscesca Melandri, die den Ehrenpreis des Österreichischen Buchhandels für Toleranz in Denken und Handeln 2019 im Rahmen der Europäischen Literaturtage überreicht bekam, prognostiziert in ihrem offenen Brief, der am 27. März 2020 The Guardian erschien, angesichts der Corona-Krise: „Wenn wir unseren Blick etwas auf die entferntere Zukunft wenden, auf die noch unbekannte Zukunft, können wir mit Bestimmtheit sagen: wenn all das vorbei ist, wird die Welt nicht mehr dieselbe sein.“

Neben den Diskussionen über die aktuelle Krisenbewältigung rückt dabei langsam die Frage in das Blickfeld, wie Europa nach den Corona-Zeiten aussehen wird. Wie wird es um die europäische Integration stehen, wie um die Idee einer Solidargemeinschaft und die Vorstellung einer gemeinsamen Kultur?

Franscesca Melandri, who was awarded the 2019 Austrian Book Trade Honorary Award for Tolerance in Thought and Action at the European Literature Days, writes in her open letter about the Covid-19 outbreak “from your future”, published on 27 March 2020 in The Guardian: “If we turn our gaze to the more distant future, the future which is unknown both to you and to us too, we can only tell you this: when all of this is over, the world won’t be the same.”

Amidst discussions about how to overcome the current crisis, the question slowly coming into view focuses on what Europe will look like after the Coronavirus epidemic. What will be the future for European integration, the idea of community based on solidarity and the vision of a common culture?
